Centenary Square Birmingham Public Realm

Centenary Square Birmingham Public Realm

Fitzgerald Contractors successfully completed a £7M public realm contract to redevelop Centenary Square across a 16,000m2 area which was delivered in partnership with Bouygues UK for Birmingham City Council. The project site is located adjacent to Birmingham Library, the Rep Theatre, new Midlands Metro and ICC building and receives high pedestrian footfall.

The design for Centenary Square was selected through a RIBA International Design Competition, which resulted in Graeme Massie Landscape Architects and it’s ‘Hall of Columns’ design being selected. The works involved the installation of high-specification paving with 12,500m2 of granite setts being installed before completion in Spring 2019, and at the time of its construction, the contract was one of the largest granite paving schemes in Europe.

The project also involved the construction of a 6m deep, 10.5m dia shaft to form the subterranean heart of the development and the control centre for the 65m x 30m reflection pool as well as drainage works and installation of two large attenuation tanks.

Our works were fully segregated from pedestrians by secure hoarding which allowed unimpeded access to numerous surrounding buildings, the project team were commended by our client for their considerate construction action plan which ensured that all health, safety and environmental risks were mitigated. There were a number of other construction projects in progress during our contract period and our pedestrian management seamlessly integrated with surrounding pedestrian flows.  In Autumn 2018 the site team successfully programmed works to accommodate the possession of one third of the site for the Conservative Party Conference, all whilst ensuring that the programme duration was maintained.
