Fitzgerald Wins Key Motorway Improvement Scheme

Fitzgerald Contractors have been appointed to deliver slip road improvement works at Junction 12 of the M5 motorway in Gloucester for client St. Modwen on behalf of Highways England.

The scheme, located on the southbound off-slip at Quedgeley Interchange is vital in tackling existing vehicle capacity issues that historically results in queues on the slip road in peak periods. The upgrade works will increase the volume of left turning traffic allowing for smoother vehicle flow through the junction, in particular to the St. Modwen Business Park development.

The scope of works involves widening and resurfacing the off-slip road, reconstruction of the pavement as well as relocation of existing drainage and installation of new drainage. The contract is scheduled to be carried out over a 9 week period and involves installation of new signage for the road layout, relocating lighting columns and provision of road marking and landscaping.

The time critical scheme will be carried out under night-time closures in close proximity to high speed vehicle movements. During preconstruction Fitzgerald’s project management team have collaborated extensively with our traffic management partner Traffix Ltd to develop an extensive traffic management plan to manage risks and to provide a safe and efficient working environment.

Fitzgerald Contractors Managing Director Nick Coley said: ‘The contract award is our first post-lockdown and preparation work is already underway with works beginning in July. The improved junction layout will help to facilitate growth and support the region in meeting its’ economic development objectives’.
