Midlands based civil engineers Fitzgerald Contractors have been awarded a CIHT (The Chartered Institute of Highways & Transportation) award along with construction partners Bowmer and Kirkland and Arup for the highway work at the Spenhill development at Swan Shopping Centre, Yardley in Birmingham.
Fitzgerald Contractors worked in conjunction with Bowmer and Kirkland and Arup to deliver this £1.7 million highway scheme that was constructed as part of a Section 278 agreement at the well known Birmingham landmark that includes a new Tesco Extra Store and a number of other retailers.
The project team were presented with the award at the annual CIHT West Midlands regional awards held at The Manor, Meriden. The CIHT Awards are a celebration of the highways and transportation industry and the methodical, innovative and resourceful professionals that inspire improvements to our society. It is an opportunity to reward the remarkable achievements of those working in the sector and to promote this professionalism and best practice to a wider industry audience.
The team adopted a collaborative approach from the outset and worked closely with the highway authority, local residents groups, councillors, and neighbouring landowners/ occupiers to deliver the scheme with an aim of minimising disruption to all concerned whilst sections of the public highway were stopped up and access arrangements for residents and local businesses were altered
Nick Coley, Director Thomas Vale Construction commented: “The CIHT awards are a brilliant way to recognise the performance of the business alongside all those who work hard to ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard, to win the award makes the hard work that more worthwhile. The highways and transport sector is getting more and more recognition each year, which is great for people to identify the hard work we put into the projects.”
David Black, the newly elected Regional Chairman of the CIHT West Midlands Branch added: “I’d like to congratulate Fitzgerald on the thoroughly well-deserved award for the A4040 Highway Re-alignment Scheme. The project clearly had its challenges but the innovative solutions delivered are of great credit to the project team and further enhance the reputation of highway and transportation in the West Midlands.”
